Biography

“Rüdiger Lotter demonstrates his stylistic mastery as well as an exceptional sense for expression and dramaturgy in shaping these works as the director of his Hofkapelle München,”
– Wanderer, November 2022.

Rüdiger Lotter is one of the most distinguished and versatile artists of his generation today. He founded the Hofkapelle München, an original-sound ensemble that has achieved international success for over ten years and was awarded the Echo Klassik in 2015.

As a conductor, he has appeared at major festivals such as the Chopin Festival in Warsaw, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Rheingau Music Festival, MA Festival in Bruges, Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, Regensburg Early Music Days, Styriarte, and Herne Early Music Days. He has led orchestras including the WDR Symphony Orchestra, Bochum Symphony Orchestra, Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, and the Ludwigsburg Festival Orchestra. Lotter has extensive experience collaborating with internationally renowned singers such as Christiane Karg, Franco Fagioli, Julia Lezhneva, Yeree Suh, Max Emanuel Cencic, Valer Sabadus, Anna Lucia Richter, Olivia Vermeulen, and Julian Prégardien. He has also worked with choirs including the Bavarian Radio Choir, Chorwerk Ruhr, and the KlangVerwaltung Choir. In 2024, to further represent the history and repertoire of the Hofkapelle München, he expanded the ensemble to include a professional choir, the Choir of the Hofkapelle München.

As an enthusiastic musical explorer, Lotter often focuses on lesser-known works from the Baroque and Classical periods. His collaboration with baritone Konstantin Krimmel on the album Zauberoper, released by Alpha, highlighted Franz Schikaneder’s creative vision and his Theater auf der Wieden in the program's concept. His revival and recording of Schikaneder’s opera The Philosopher’s Stone, featuring Daniel Behle and Michael Schade in the lead roles, was enthusiastically received at the Würzburg Mozart Festival in 2023 and is scheduled to be performed at the Theater an der Wien in 2025. In 2024, Lotter produced his own version of The Magic Flute, which was performed at the Herrenchiemsee Festival and Konzerthaus Blaibach, garnering significant media attention. Lotter's repertoire extends from early music to contemporary compositions; in 2020, he conducted the premiere of Lisa Streich’s Händeküssen, a work commissioned by the Cologne Philharmonic for the Hofkapelle München as part of the "No Beethoven" project.

As a Baroque violinist, Rüdiger Lotter has set standards with several CD recordings, notably with Heinrich Ignaz Biber’s Rosary Sonatas, which he recorded live in 2004 to mark Biber’s 300th anniversary. In 2018, Gramophone, the British music magazine, acclaimed this recording as the best available on the market. Regarding his recording of the Brandenburg Concertos, the music press noted, “Future recordings will have to measure up to this one.”

Since 2023, Rüdiger Lotter has taught violin, historical performance practice, and orchestral conducting at the Academy of Music in Darmstadt.
